Resources
What to do after hurricane or storm damage to your Florida home.
The first few days after a storm shape the entire claim. This checklist helps protect it.
Start with safety. Stay away from downed power lines, standing water near electrical outlets, and damaged structures until they are safe.
Document before you clean. Take photos and video of every damaged area, inside and out, with wide shots and close-ups. Photograph damaged belongings before you throw anything away, and keep damaged materials if you safely can.
Prevent further damage. Your policy likely requires you to take reasonable steps, like tarping a roof or removing standing water. Save every receipt for tarps, water removal, and emergency repairs.
Report the claim promptly. Florida law sets deadlines for reporting property damage, and late notice is a common reason insurers deny claims. Write down your claim number and the name of every person you speak with.
Be prepared for the adjuster. Walk the property with the adjuster, point out all the damage, and ask for a copy of their estimate and photos. If the estimate looks low or leaves out damage, you do not have to accept it as final.
